Language Attributes and Screen Readers

Now Playing:

Description:

This demonstrates how screen readers, in this case JAWS, use the language attribute to correctly pronounce text on the screen. The demonstration consists of the following. 1. the screen reader reading English text 2. the screen reader reading Spanish text, but the language attribute is not set for the Spanish text so the screen reader attempts to read the words like they are English words. The result is the screen reader sounds like a bad American tourist. 3. the screen reader reading the Spanish text with the language attribute properly set so the Spanish words are read with the correct pronunciation.
