Multimedia Accessibility Overview
The basics
Multimedia accessibility usually requires three main components.
- Videos must have captions
- Visual information needs to be communicated auditorily.
- The video player must be accessible
Creating captions
Creating captions for recorded video is a three-step process.
- Create a text transcript of the audio portion of the multimedia. Speaking from a transcript usually results in a better presentation and can be uploaded to create accurate captioning tracks and transcripts.
- Use the auto-generated captions as a starting point to ensure your multimedia has captions. Use the edit feature to edit the captions to ensure 100% accuracy.
- You can always outsource captioning to a vendor. NC State has established a convenience contract for transcript, caption creation, and live captioning services.
The video player
The player where users view the video must be accessible as well. A common accessibility problem with video players is they require a mouse to use them. It is important to make sure the video player is designed to be usable by all people.
There are a number of options for presenting video accessibly.
